History of The Grand

The Grand , all adorned in the red draping & tied back with gold tassels, red carpet, and lighted marquee greets you and your guests with a feeling of expectation for your red carpet event!

The Grand is uniquely elegant and has a rich history of entertainment throughout history. Located in Historic Downtown New Albany along the Ohio river, this creates a beautiful background for your event. The Grand is only a few short blocks from several Hotels & a beautiful bed & breakfast, Admiral Bicknell Inn, to accommodate out of town guests. The Grand is located Just minutes of Louisville International Airport, and downtown Louisville.

The Grand was built in 1909 and began its long tenure of providing its patrons with excellent entertainment. Admission of 10 cents entitled a person to stay an hour and witness two acts of vaudeville, see three reels of moving pictures & hear two songs besides enjoying one of the best orchestras in commission.

In 1929, The Grand was remodeled and outfitted with “Fox Movietone”, which was cutting edge at the time. This enabled patrons to see and hear news related to national and world events for the first time. By 1931, sixteen theaters and two opera houses came and went in New Albany, leaving only The Grand and the Indiana theaters. In January 1937, the Ohio River rose to an unprecedented level. Boats were the only means of transportation in the downtown area. At the crest of the flood, the water was “ticket counter” high, on the box office of The Grand. In July The Grand started its renovation project which was completed that December. By the 1950’s the Grand, one of the first theaters in New Albany was the only theater left. The last movie shown in The Grand was in 1975.

Many times we are touched and entertained to hear people speak of their memories and recollections of days spent here at The Grand in such a different time. We hope your special memory of your wedding day will be added to this collection of cherished memories shared and created at The Grand.
